The WANDERBOX and me
My expectations are high when Kilian and I go into the basement to take a look at the WANDERBOX. I have already been told a lot about the box - it should be practical, a whole room packed in a box - actually perfect for a nomadic life like the one I lead in Munich. (Anyone who has ever looked for apartments or shared flats in Munich knows that it is a long process and that you move from sublease to sublease).
So there she stands, in the semi-darkness of the cellar. A few cardboard boxes are stacked over the black cover of the box, which, to be honest, had different dimensions than the word “box” in my head associates. The big lettering "WANDERBOX" is still easy to recognize - Touché, dear marketing department, that makes a difference.
So we free the WANDERBOX from the cardboard boxes, attack - quite difficult, but two can do it - and carry the item to the second floor. We are surprised how easy it is. The dimensions are not box-like (in my head a box is a cube ...), but long and relatively narrow, but not too high, that is to say: You can get around the corners of the stairwell easily. The padded handles, which also - praise the packaging designer - hang in exactly the right place.
Into the room with the box and pulled the cover down - whack, there is the thing. Exciting, exciting. Of course, we first check everything - a physicist and an engineer assembling furniture, you can imagine. Good workmanship, the wood looks valuable, round corners (whether that's coordinated with Appel?). Then it starts. Of course, none of us read the operating instructions. Simply open everything, take it apart, distribute it somewhere in the room and take a look.
The table is made quickly. Legs in the grooves, tighten four screws (here, too: there is just enough space that you can turn the hexagon bowl all the way through, no repositioning. That makes the Ikea-afflicted end customer happy), done. The desk is big - not quite what I'm used to.
Then come the banks. The same principle as with the table, but when we set it up we notice that we have screwed in legs of different lengths. The bench wobbles, but properly. Fortunately, it can be corrected quickly, the others are probably for bed. But we have to talk to the manufacturer again, legs of the same length would be better.
I decide to just build a bench and give the bed higher legs, so my moving boxes fit perfectly underneath and I have more storage space in the room. With the slatted frame over it, hooked - done. I also don't take the bench to sit at the table. Instead, I take two quick-release clamps and connect the bench to the bed so that a larger mattress fits on it.
Let's go to the sideboard / cloakroom. Here the decision on how to set up the box turns out to be more challenging. How do I actually want to furnish my room? Well, the desk to the window is clear. Then the bed has to be in the back corner. Well, the other corner for the closet is just left in front. Boards mounted by inserting, the sliding elements for the shoe cabinet pushed in and finished. Perfect - maybe tear up half an hour with stupid slogans and philosophize about the room layout. Not bad, since consumer protection will be happy that a product promise is kept.
Now, 4 months later, I'm still happy with my WANDERBOX. The desk has not turned out to be too big, if you have the space, then you just use it. Everything that I need for everyday clothes fits into the sideboard / cloakroom. And my construction of bed and bench into a large bed can not only endure me alone, but also visitors. The light construction, however, tends to slip.
I'm already looking forward to it if I should move and reassemble the WANDERBOX and take it with me. But I'll tell you about that in the next report.

Die WANDERBOX und Ich
Meine Erwartungen sind hoch, als Kilian und ich in den Keller gehen, um uns die WANDERBOX anzuschauen. Vieles wurde mir bereits über die Box berichtet – praktisch soll sie sein, ein ganzes Zimmer in einer Box verpackt – eigentlich perfekt für so ein Nomadenleben, wie ich es in München führe. (Jeder, der schonmal in München Wohnungen oder WGs gesucht hat, weiß, dass das ein langer Prozess ist und man von Zwischenmiete zu Zwischenmiete weiterwandert).
Da steht sie also, im Halbdunkeln des Kellers. Über der schwarzen Hülle der Box, die ehrlich gesagt andere Dimensionen hatte als das Wort „Box“ in meinem Kopf assoziiert hat, sind einige Pappkartons gestapelt. Der große Schriftzug „WANDERBOX“ ist dennoch gut zu erkennen – Touché, liebe Marketingabteilung, das macht schon mal was her.
Wir befreien also die WANDERBOX von den Pappkartons, greifen an – doch ziemlich schwer, aber zu zweit geht’s – und tragen das Teil in den zweiten Stock. Wir sind überrascht, wie einfach das geht. Die Dimensionen sind zwar nicht boxartig (in meinem Kopf ist eine Box ein Würfel…), dafür aber lang und relativ schmal, aber nicht zu hoch, will heißen: Man kommt gut um die Ecken im Treppenhaus rum. Die gepolsterten Griffe, die auch – ein Lob an den Verpackungsdesigner – genau an der richtigen Stelle hängen.
Ab ins Zimmer mit dem Kasten und die Hülle runtergezogen - zack, da ist das Ding. Spannend, spannend. Wir prüfen natürlich erstmal alles – ein Physiker und ein Ingenieur beim Möbelaufbauen, ihr könnt es euch vorstellen. Gute Verarbeitung, das Holz wirkt wertig, runde Ecken (ob das mit Appel abgestimmt ist?). Dann geht’s los. Die Bedienungsanleitung liest natürlich keiner von uns. Einfach mal alles aufmachen, auseinandernehmen, irgendwo im Zimmer verteilen und mal gucken.
Der Tisch ist schnell gemacht. Beine in die Nuten, vier Schrauben festdrehen (auch hier: es ist genau so viel Platz, dass man den Sechskantschüssel einmal komplett durchdrehen kann, kein Umsetzen. Das freut den Ikeageplagten Endkunden), fertig. Groß ist der Schreibtisch – nicht ganz das was ich gewohnt bin.
Danach kommen die Bänke dran. Gleiches Prinzip wie beim Tisch, aber beim Aufstellen merken wir, dass wir verschieden lange Beine eingeschraubt haben. Die Bank wackelt, aber gehörig. Lässt sich zum Glück schnell korrigieren, die anderen sind wohl fürs Bett. Da müssen wir aber nochmal mit dem Hersteller reden, gleichlange Beine wären schon besser.
Ich entscheide mich dafür nur eine Bank aufzubauen und dafür dem Bett höhere Beine zu verpassen, so passen meine Umzugskartons perfekt drunter und ich habe mehr Staufläche im Zimmer. Noch den Lattenrost drüber, eingehakt – fertig. Die Bank nehme ich auch nicht um am Tisch zu sitzen. Stattdessen nehme ich zwei Schnellspanner und verbinde die Bank mit dem Bett, so passt eine größere Matratze drauf.
Auf geht’s an das Sideboard/Garderobe. Hier gestaltet sich die Entscheidung, wie rum man den Kasten aufstellt, als herausfordernder. Wie will ich eigentlich mein Zimmer einrichten? Gut, Schreibtisch ans Fenster ist klar. Dann muss das Bett hinten in die Ecke. Naja, bleibt wohl nur da vorne die andere Ecke für den Schrank. Bretter durch einlegen montiert, die Schiebeelemente für den Schuhschrank eingeschoben uuuund fertig. Perfekt – halbe Stunde vielleicht mit blöden Sprüchen reißen und über die Raumeinteilung philosophieren. Nicht schlecht, da wird sich der Verbraucherschutz freuen, dass ein Produktversprechen eingehalten wird.
Jetzt, 4 Monate später, bin ich immer noch glücklich mit meiner WANDERBOX. Der Schreibtisch hat sich nicht als zu groß herausgestellt, wenn man den Platz hat, dann nutzt man ihn halt einfach auch. In das Sideboard/Garderobe passt alles rein, was ich so an Klamotten im Alltag brauche. Und meine Konstruktion aus Bett und Bank zu großem Bett hält nicht nur mich allein aus, sondern auch Besuch. Wobei die leichte Konstruktion, dann doch gerne verrutscht.
Ich freue mich schon drauf, wenn ich mal umziehen sollte und die WANDERBOX wieder zusammenbaue und mitnehme. Aber das erzähle ich euch dann im nächsten Bericht.
