In 2019, 270,294 Germans moved abroad (0.33% of all residents).
That is around 58,000 more than Germans moved back to Germany.
The loss of migration of German citizens is practically a tradition, as a look at the Statista graphic - see below - shows.
The Federal Statistical Office last recorded a positive migration balance in 2004.
The most popular destinations for German emigrants are Switzerland (16,000), Austria (12,000) and the United States (10,000).
However, a total of around 1,559,000 people moved abroad in 2019 and 1,232,000 moved abroad. So there was a net influx to Germany of 327,000 people.

Im Jahr 2019 sind 270.294 Deutsche ins Ausland gezogen (0,33% aller Einwohner).
Das sind rund 58.000 mehr, als Deutsche wieder nach Deutschland zuzogen.
Der Wanderungsverlust deutscher Staatsbürger/innen hat praktisch schon Tradition, wie der Blick auf die Statista-Grafik – siehe unten - zeigt.
Eine positive Wanderungsbilanz verzeichnete das Statistische Bundesamt zuletzt 2004.
Beliebteste Ziele deutscher Auswanderer sind die Schweiz (16.000), Österreich (12.000) und die Vereinigten Staaten (10.000).
Jedoch: insgesamt sind im Jahr 2019 rund 1.559.000 Personen aus dem Ausland zugezogen und 1.232.000 ins Ausland weggezogen.
Also gab es einen netto Zuzug nach Deutschland von 327.000 Personen.
